We’re pleased to introduce a new weekly feature on the East Coast Foodie: every Thursday we will be featuring a drinkable recipe suggestion. After all, Friday is only a day away – what better way to get geared up for the weekend?
Today’s feature is a classic cocktail that I’ve recently discovered: the Manhattan. This is an oldie but a goodie: created in the 1860s, it enjoyed popularity well into the 1950s and ’60s. In fact, you may have seen its cameo appearances on the hit AMC show Mad Men, where cocktails are never far out of reach!
The Manhattan is a great choice for those who want something that’s not overly sweet and that packs a decent punch. Below you’ll find the “official” recipe – feel free to improvise and add your own flair, or go with the tried, tested and true version.
Manhattan Recipe:
1 part sweet red vermouth
2.5 parts Rye or Candian whiskey
dash of Angostura bitters
Maraschino or your own home-made alcohol-infused cherry to garnish
Mix in a shaker with ice and serve in a martini glass, or simply stir ingredients into a highball with ice. Enjoy!
Great new column! I can’t wait to try this Manhattan cocktail recipe- and who knew it hearkens back to the 1860s! Wow-!

I agree! Don’t they look awesome!?
I was a guinea pig for this one…and it was delicious!
Lol – that was my mom commenting using my iPad and she was therefore signed in as me – thanks for the comment and for being my guinea pig, mom! 🙂
